inflation rate and consumer price index for industrial workers decrease

The rate of inflation based upon the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers witnessed a marginal decrease of 0.40 percentage points during November 2004. It went down from 4.75% in October 2004 to 4.17% in November 2004. In November 2003, the inflation rate was 3.07 %.

The All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for October 2004 (base 1982-100) went down by one point to stand at 525 (five hundred twenty five) points.

The Rise/Fall in index varied from centre to centre. In 40 centres, the index decreased between 1 to 16 points and in 6 centres it remained constant whereas in another 24 centres it recorded a increase of 1 to 17 points when compared to the previous month.

During the month, Howrah centre experienced the maximum decrease of 16 points. The decrease is mainly due to fall in prices of Mustard oil, Fresh Fish, Onions and Vegetables and Fruits. Madurai Centre experienced a maximum increase of 17 points. The increase is mainly due to the rise in prices of Arhar Dal, Fish Fresh, vegetables and fruits etc. However, the index remained stationery in 6 centres viz. Barbil, Guwahati, Labac-Silchar, Noamundi, Solapur and Visakhapatnam.

The index in respect of six main centres for October 2004 stood at the following level: -
