Indian Railways have taken up the phase-II indigenisation of erstwhile ABB A.C. 3-phase electric locomotive technology after absorption of such technology in the phase-I. The indigenisation programme for major sub-systems constituting 60 per cent of the cost of locomotive has been completed.
AC 3-phase 6000 high horse power electric locomotive, which is 30 per cent energy efficient, was imported from the erstwhile M/s. ABB of Switzerland in 1993-1994 under an agreement with a package of technology transfer for indigenous manufacture of such electric locos at the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) over a period of ten years
