Monday, December 06, 2004

India and Italy today discussed possibilities of increasing agricultural trade between the two countries.

Shri Kanti Lal Bhuria, Union Minister of State for Agriculture, asked the visiting Italian Minister of State for Agriculture Mr. Paolo Scarpa Bonazza Buora to expedite the export of live and bovine products to the European Union.

EU stopped imports from countries using vaccination on animals for Foot and Mouth Decease (FMD). As India vaccinates animals for FMD, this resulted in a break in exporting bovine products to EU countries. Since this ban has no scientific basis, EU may consider lifting it Shri Kanti Lal Bhuria said.

The Minister also expressed India’s willingness to cooperate with Italian producing olive oil and wine products.

The Italian Agriculture Minister said that he will take up the import of bovine products with EU at appropriate level at the earliest. He also said that both the countries may cooperate in the field of farm machinery

Senior official from the Ministry also participated in the meeting.
