Following the setting up of Regional Vigilance Telecom Monitoring Cells at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad by the Department of Telecommunications, to vigorously detect the illegal international calls, three more illegal exchanges – two in Delhi and one in Nagpur have been detected and busted with the help of Local Police. The reason attributed to the fast detection is the recently providing of Toll free numbers- 1600-110-420 or 011-2373-1100 for the general public to pass on the information about the grey international calls. One such information in the Vigilance Telecom Monitoring Cell on the Toll Free Telephone Number “1600-110-420” was received regarding the presentation of Local CLI for an international call. On investigation, it was found that the number which was presented as CLI was working at Net Serve of Nehru Place area, New Delhi.
On search of these premises, equipment meant for routing of illegal international call like VoIP Gateway, router, LAN switch etc., were found. Eight telephone lines of TouchTel (M/s Bharti Telecom) and three Lines of Tata Indicom and four Telephone lines of Tata Indicom and four Lines of Touchtel were found connected to illegal setup at two different places. For connecting to Internet, the illegal setup had used the DSL connection of M/s VSNL and M/s Dishnet.
Another raid was conducted at Nagpur simultaneously in which it was found that one M/s Sidpro Info (Pvt), Limited obtained 24 lines of Fixed wireless telephone (FWT) and 512 Kbps of leased line on Radio Link both from M/s Reliance Infocomm Limited. These lines were misused for routing of illegal International call and were distributing the calls to various subscribers through out the country. These illegal operators receive the incoming international calls through internet and put them on the local/national telecom network by bypassing the International Long Distance Telecom Operators. Thus, these illegal setups not only cause huge financial loss to the country but equally pose a great threat to the nation’s security as these calls are beyond the purview of lawful monitoring and can be misused by anti-national elements.
Any person who come across such illegal international calls i.e. regarding receipt of local/national CLI on international call can now pass on the information to the DoT on the toll free numbers 1600-110-420 or 011-23731100.
