health awareness week for parliamentarians

A ‘Health Awareness Week’ organized by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Speaker of Lok Sabha, Shri Somnath Chatterjee, today at the Parliament House Annexe, New Delhi. In his welcome address the Hon’ble Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, said that the life-style and behavioral patterns of people are undergoing rapid changes leading to a sharp increase in the prevalence of non-communicable disease. He added that the campaign focuses on fighting non-communicable diseases through simple changes in dietary habits and daily lifestyle.

Hon’ble Minister emphasized that the curative approach to health care has to change towards prevention of disease and promotion of health. Focusing on the responsibilities of Parliamentarians as policy makers, the Hon’ble Minister highlighted the need for them to be aware of the risk factors for life style diseases and to manage them. In this context, he stressed that creating awareness among peoples representatives would be significant in disseminating this message among masses. Towards this end ‘Health Awareness Week’ has been organized for the Parliamentarians from 6th to 11th December, 2004 at Parliament House Annexe.

Hon’ble Speaker appreciated the initiative taken by the Minister of Health and Family Welfare in organizing such an event. He hoped that the Hon’ble Members would utilize this unique opportunity and benefit from this. He wished that such awareness should reach every part of the country with the active involvement of States and Union Territories. On this occasion, Hon’ble Speaker released a folder having valuable information on healthy habits and lifestyles diseases and inaugurated an exhibition on this theme.

Hon’ble Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Smt. Panabaka Lakshmi while proposing a vote of thanks underlined the need for healthy habits in maintaining good health.
