Government of Sikkim has been permitted to lift the monthly allocation of levy sugar quota directly from the sugar mills w.e.f. January 2005. This has been done on a request from the Government of Sikkim to take over the distribution work of levy sugar and lifting of its monthly quota of levy sugar directly instead of receiving it through the Food Corporation of India. The Government of Sikkim has now been given the responsibility to lift the levy sugar directly from the sugar mills to whom the quota is allotted by the Directorate of Sugar, Department of Food and Public Distribution and ensure its distribution through the Public Distribution System of the State.
With this, the status of Sikkim as an FCI operated state has been changed to a Direct Allottee State as far as the distribution of levy sugar is concerned.
