Shri Shankersinh Vaghela, Minister of Textiles in a written statement informed the Rajya Sabha today that an Expert Committee on Technical Textiles has submitted its report to the Central Government. The Committee has suggested a Five Year Action Plan for promotion of technical textiles.

The Committee has short-listed a phased programme for development of twenty-five identified products/product groups such as geotextiles, sports, footwear, fire retardant, health related textiles, fabrics, computer ribbon, filters automobile textiles, etc. The Committee has recommended the setting up of an Inter-ministerial Committee to co-ordinate the implementation of the Action Plan recommended by Expert Committee of Technical Textiles (ECTT).; Setting up of centres of excellence; Creation of facilities for testing and evaluation of technical textiles, Development of Resource Centre with I.T. Infrastructure. The Committee has also recommended creation of facilities for indigenous development facilities for training of core personnel, regular training of personnel, creating awareness, designation of centres of excellence.

A Steering Committee for Development and Growth of Technical Textiles (SCDGTT) is to be set up under the chairmanship of Textiles Commissioner to monitor and review the growth of the technical textiles industry and also activities of centers of excellence. The recommendations made are being examined by the Government.

The Minister also informed that the market size of technical textiles is expected to go up from about Rs.19.130 crore in 2003-04 to Rs.29.579 crore by 2007-08.
