five crore employment opportunities to be created during 10th plan

The number of unemployed in the country on usual status basis has gone up from around 7.5 million in 1993-94 to 9.0 million in 1999-2000.

Stating this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of Labour and Employment Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that unemployment does continue to rise in the world as per the International Labour Organisation Report on Global Employment trends. Shri Rao said that the government is targeting to create five crore employment opportunities during the 10th Plan. He said that around three crore employment opportunities will be created in the normal growth process and the remaining two crore employment opportunities through special employment generation programmes in labour intensive sectors. Special emphasis will be on agriculture, irrigation, agro-forestry, small and medium enterprises, information/ communication technology, tourism and other services, the Minister added. In another written reply Shri Rao said that the Ministry of Labour and Employment has no proposal for setting up of an Employment Commission.
