The Labour Ministry is deploying medical relief teams comprising of doctors and para-medical staff to Tsumani effected coastal areas of the country. The medical teams comprising of 150 doctors and para-medical staff from Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) is leaving today for the affected areas of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Car Nicobar islands and is likely to be in position by tomorrow. They include a full fledged medical team comprising of twelve doctors and essential para-medical staff which is being airlifted to Port Blair for further deployment in Car-Nicobar islands along with medicines and medical equipment. Each of the medical team includes specialist doctors in medicine, surgery, orthopaedics and paediatrics and essential component of para-medical staff such as nurses, pharmacists, radiographers and laboratory technicians.

The doctors and para-medical staff has been deployed from ESIC hospitals located in Southern area. The ESI Corporation will be providing emergency medical services including free supply of drugs and dressings to the affected people. The doctors have been authorised to purchase medicines locally if need be. The teams will be working in coordination with the central and state authorities overseeing the relief operations.

The Employees Provident Fund Organisation, also working under the aegis of the Labour Ministry, has made special arrangements for expeditious disposal of claims from the entitled claimants in the affected areas. It has set up special cells of officials which are being deputed to the affected areas. They will facilitate payment of provident fund and pension to the family of the member of the Fund who have been killed in last Sunday’s Tsunami fury.

The Corporation has also decided to grant non-refundable advance to the extent of Rs.5000/- from the provident fund account of the member. The affected members have also been authorised to withdraw from the Fund advance for repair/construction of houses including acquisition of suitable site for the purpose.

The staff of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation has also decided to donate one day’s salary to Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
