Friday, December 03, 2004

The Government today asked the Director of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar, Smt. S.K.Pandey to proceed on long leave and withdrew the nomination of Shri M.K.Kaw, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute following their failure to arrest the deteriorating situation at the Institute. The Secretary, Higher and Technical Education, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri P K Tripathi has been asked to hold additional charge of Director of the Institute till further orders. The Secretary, Textiles, Government of India, Shri Wajahat Habibullah, has been nominated as Chairman, Board of Governors of the Institute.

It may be recalled that for the past few months, the faculty members and employees of NIT, Srinagar have been seething with discontent over the style of functioning of the Director and Chairman of the Institute. The employees started protesting by way of token strike and as there was no improvement in the functioning of the Director, the agitation gained momentum and the situation started getting worse. The employees resorted to hunger strike from November, 24 2004. The Director and the Chairman of the Institute were not able to address the grievances of the faculty members and employees. Recently, the Director of the Institute had unilaterally decided to close down the Institute and suspended some of the employees without taking the Ministry into confidence.

Today’s action is aimed at improving the situation and restoring normalcy at the Institute.
