There has been no delay in implementation of recommendations of Railway Safety Review Committees report (1999). No specific list of bridges was mentioned by Committee in their report. However, Committee had noted about 262 distressed bridges existed on Indian Railways as on April 1, 1999. In pursuance of their recommendations, all distressed bridges were got inspected by Territorial Chief Engineers of the Railways and their rehabilitation/rebuilding taken up. The activity of rehabilitation/ rebuilding of these distressed bridges and fresh accruals has got a fillip since the sanction of Special Railways Safety Fund (SRSF) in 2001-02 and a total of 927 distressed bridges have been rebuilt/rehabilitated in the last five years.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways, Shri R. Velu in a written reply to a question from Shri S.P.M. Syed Khan, in the Rajya Sabha today.
