The Results of the National Sample Survey 58th are to be discussed at a high-level Seminar being organised by the National Sample Survey Organization, here on Friday. The objective of the Seminar is not only to benefit from the results but also see whether further improvement can be made in the forthcoming surveys. A number of papers relating to the survey will be presented at two technical sessions. The one day seminar is being inaugurated by the Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes and is expected to be attended by over 150 delegates from Research Institutions and Central and State Government Agencies.
The 58th Survey conducted between July-December 2002 covered subjects pertaining to disability, housing conditions, village facilities and in particular the slum conditions besides household consumer expenditure. Data on employment and unemployment were also collected and collated during the field survey.
The National Sample Survey Organisation came into being in 1950, with the primary objective of collecting comprehensive and continuing information on a whole range of socio-economic variables, through nation-wide field surveys. Since then the NSSO has been conducting integrated surveys on a variety of subjects relating to various aspects of human life. It has so far completed 60 rounds of surveys and brought out 488 reports. These have helped the government in framing policies and programmes besides being helpful to Research Institutions and academics.
