Shri S. Jaipal Reddy, Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, today released the Government of India official calendar for 2005. The theme of the calendar for the year 2005 is Indian Music A Tribute. Twelve eminent musicians including four Bharat Ratna Awardees and eight luminaries of the past have been taken up for the calendar.
The four Bharat Ratna musicians are: (late) M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Pt. Ravi Shankar and Lata Mangeshkar. The other eight eminent musicians are D. V. Paluskar, D. Venkataswamy Naidu, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, T. N. Rajratnam Pillai, Begum Akhtar, Palaghat T. S. Mani Iyer, Chembai Vaidyanath Bhagavathar and Kumar Gandharva. Besides, the fly-leaf of the calendar contains photographs of 54 other great musicians of the past with sketches of Tansen and Thyagaraja. Indian music has a rich tradition, a great deal of variety and a vast repertoire. The selection is only illustrative in view of the limited space.
DAVP brings out the official calendar for Government of India every year on a designated theme. As many as 3.5 lakh copies are being printed. The calendar is distributed to all Union Ministries, Members of Parliament and Central Government Offices of the country. It is also sent to State Governments, Indian Embassies abroad and Foreign Embassies in India.
