The Government proposes to introduce a new consumer policy in view of the changing trend of consumerism. The central government has constituted a Working group on February 26, 2004 under the chairpersonship of Principal Secretary, Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection, Government of Tamil Nadu. The working group consists of Secretaries in charge of Consumer Affairs, of the Governments of Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and representatives of Voluntary Consumer Organisations. The working group has already started its consultations and it is yet to finalise its recommendations of the National Consumer Policy.

After the receipt of recommendations of the working group, action, required for its implementation will be taken. This information was given in Rajya Sabha today by the Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Taslimuddin in reply to a question of Shri V. Narayanasamy.
