concern over illegal immigration in north-eastern states

The Rajya Sabha was informed during Question Hour that government has not received any reports on the concern created by the Census Report 2001 on Religion in the North-Eastern States. But the illegal immigration from Bangladesh has been a cause of concern. The Minister of State for Home, Shri Manikrao H. Gavit told the house that the government has been taking several steps to deal with the problem which inter-alia include:



Identification and deportation of Bangladeshis who are staying illegally after due verification and as per laid down procedure.


Regular reviews on border management situation with the Government of Bangladesh through an institutional framework comprising meetings of Directors General of the BSF and BDR. The position is also reviewed in the meetings of the Joint Working Group, Home Secretary level talks besides being discussed at the diplomatic and political levels.


Setting up police posts to check infiltration from Bangladesh.


Round the clock surveillance of the border by patrolling.


Conduct of special operations and upgradation of intelligence network.


Erection of border fencing and construction of border roads.
