Rajya Sabha

The Government has an action plan to computerise the working of all large post offices in Metros and other big cities for improving efficiency. This was stated by the Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shakeel Ahmad in a written reply to a question by Shri Lalit Suri in the Rajya Sabha today.

Dr. Ahmad further stated that providing computers to post offices located in cities is an on-going process and post offices having relatively high traffic and counter operations are being taken up for computerisation in a phased manner, depending upon the availability of funds and approval of the competent authority. At the end of Ninth Five Year Plan, 506 Head Post Offices and 1266 Sub Post Offices were provided with computers. By the end of the Tenth Five Year Plan (2006-07), all 845 Head Post Offices and 6861 large Sub Post Offices in the country are proposed to be fully computerised covering all metros and big cities.
