The permission for cutting down 17,514 trees in 2001-02 , 12,278 trees in 2002-03 and 12,112 trees in 2003-04 were granted under Delhi Tree Preservation Act, 1994 and Rules made under the Act with a condition to plant ten trees in place of one tree felled.
The compensatory plantation has been contemplated/taken place on around 132 sites by various agencies at various places in Delhi. Approximately 3,39,186 trees have been planted during last three years by National Highway Authority of India, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Delhi Development Authority, Public Works Department and Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The provisions of the Act provide for plantation of trees in place of tree felled or disposed. The maintenance of the tree plantation is regularly monitored by the Government of National Capital Territory ( NCT) of Delhi.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests Shri Namo Narain Meena in a written reply to a question from Member of Parliament Shri Baleshwar Yadav in the Lok Sabha today.
