The Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) which once occurred in the plains of India has now become extinct from our country. The programme for resurrection of the species also includes cloning as a possibility.
The Ministry of Environment And Forests has constituted a team of experts comprising of Member Secretary, Central Zoo Authority (CZA), a scientist from the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), a scientist from Wildlife Institute of India and the zoo superintendent of Ahmedabad Zoo to visit Iran and initiate a dialogue with their Iranian counterparts as well as study the present habitats of the Asiatic Cheetah in that country. There is no plan to fetch a pair of Asiatic Cheetah at this stage.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Environment and Forests Shri Namo Narain Meena in a written reply to a question from Member of Parliament Shri Dalpat Singh Parste in the Lok Sabha today.
