Students of Standard 8 to 10 belonging to Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas across the country will now be sensitized against the evil practice of Female Foeticide. Awareness material for the teachers brought out by the National Commission for Women was released by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shri. M.A.A Fatmi to coincide with the Universal Human Rights Day here today. Shri. Fatmi said that it’s a matter of shame that in certain pockets of the country female foeticide and abortion of the girl child is being practiced despite the fact that in almost all sphere of life, women are shining. He regretted that scientific and technological discoveries which are meant for the welfare of mankind is being misused to go for sex determination and eventually female foeticide. He hoped that the material released today will go a long way in building awareness among the new generation and change their mindset about having a boy child. The Minister also disclosed that the CBSE Chairman Shri. Ashok Ganguly is heading a Committee to look into the possibility of introducing Physical and Health Education as a compulsory subject in school syllabus.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Dr. Poornima Advani said that today’s awareness material is only a beginning and this will also be translated to all regional languages. She said that together with legislative measures, awareness of students will help in correcting the imbalance in sex ratio seen in several states.

The Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education, Shri. B.S. Baswan said that the Ministry is actively considering a proposal to include issues such as sex education,HIV/AIDS in school syllabus.
