The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural and Rural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) decreased by one point each during November 2004. The index for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers fell to 344 and 346 points respectively.
In case of Agricultural Labourers 11 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 7 points while six states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 4 points. In three states the index remained constant.
In case of Rural Labourers 10 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 6 points while six states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 4 points. In four states the index remained constant.
West Bengal experienced sharpest decrease of 7 points each for Agricultural Labourers and 6 points for Rural Labourers. The decrease has been mainly due to fall in prices of rice, wheat atta, fresh fish, onions, green chillies, ginger, vegetables & fruits and sugar. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu recorded a maximum increase of four points each for Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers mainly due to increase in prices of rice, fresh fish, onions, fire wood and vegetables & fruits.
Meghalaya topped the index table for both Agricultural Labourers and Rural Labourers with 363 points and 361 points respectively whereas Manipur remained at the bottom of the index with 316 points for Agricultural labourers and 317 points for Rural Labourers.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL decreased marginally by 0.30 percentage point in November 2004 to stand at 3.30%. In case of Rural Labourers also, it showed a decrease of 0.30percentage point to stand at 3.28% as compared to the previous month. Respective rates of inflation during November 2003 were 3.10% and 2.76 %.
