The Committee to Review the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958 would be visiting Manipur from the 27th of this month to elicit views and public opinion on the Act.

This is the first of several visits that the Committee, headed by Justice (Retd.) B.P. Jeevan Reddy, proposes to make to the North East as part of the process of hearings on the Act. The second meeting of the Committee took place in New Delhi today.

The Committee has invited responses from individuals, organizations, parties, institutions and non-government groups on its mandate which includes whether it should recommend to the Government of India to amend the provisions of the Act to bring them in consonance with the obligations of Government towards protection of human rights or replace the Act by a more humane legislation.

The Committee has requested for responses within 30 days to its office in New Delhi at the following address. The Committee to Review the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, near Gate No.23 A, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi 110 003.

The Committee was set up on November 19, 2004. It includes Ltd.Gen.(Retd.) V.R. Raghavan, former Director-General, Military Operations, Shri P.P. Shrivastav, former Special Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr. Shivraj Nakade, former Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and Shri Sanjoy Hazarika, journalist and author.
