As many as 1686 towns have been covered till date under Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns (IDSMT) out of 4622 towns with population below 5 lakhs as per 1991 census. Rs. 790.36 crores have been released, with the State Governments providing their share of Rs. 476.76 crores. Rs. 1304.65 crores have been allocated for this scheme during 10th Plan period out of which an allocation of Rs. 200 crores have been made during the current financial year so far. 131 new towns have been covered under the scheme for which Rs. 81.87 crores have been released as central assistance during this year.
IDSMT scheme launched in 1979 with the objective of improving infrastructure facility in small and medium towns with population up to 5 lakhs as per 1991 census is financed by central and state governments in the ratio of 60:40 after excluding loan component/funds from other sources. Detailed project reports formulated by the Municipality/Urban Local Body are submitted through state governments for appraisal by Town and Country Planning Organization under the Ministry of Urban Development.
