A growth of about 15% has been registered in the total tourist traffic to the J & K during the year 2004(January to October) as compared to the same period of the year 2003. This was stated by the Minister of State for Tourism, Smt. Renuka Chowdhury in reply to a question by Smt. Maya Singh in Rajya Sabha today.

She further stated that a major infrastructure development programme has been taken up by the Ministry of Tourism under which a package of financial assistance and subsidy to House Boat owners, Hotels & Guest Houses, Shikara owners and Ponywalas is provided for the revival of tourism in the State. Besides, the State has enhanced its presence/participation in a large number of events, conferences and conventions of the tourism sector held within and outside the country with the support of Ministry of Tourism.
