Rajya Sabha
Twenty-one cultural sites have been recognized as World Heritage sites in India. Of these four are in Maharashtra, three each in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, two each in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Delhi and one each in Orissa, Goa, West Bengal Bihar and Gujarat.
No instance of endangering of any of these sites due to putting of hoardings and advertisements including painting of rocks has come to the notice of the Government.
As per Rule 8 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules 1959, the damage or defacing of any part of a centrally protected monuments and display of any advertisement is unlawful and under Rule 9, it is punishable with a fine which may be extended up to Rs. five hundred.
