The Centre is implementing a scheme for technology upgradation and modernization of the food processing units in the country. Modernisation of technology in the food processing sector is an on-going process. Under this scheme, financial assistance is provided to the entrepreneurs to the tune of 1/4th of the project cost in general areas and 33.33 per cent in difficult areas. This assistance is subject to a maximum of Rs. 50 lakh and 75 lakh respectively. The Minister of Food Processing Industries, Shri Subodhkant Sahai gave this information in the Lok Sabha today. In reply to a query he said the scheme is project-specific and not State or area-specific. Assistance is provided to the organizations implementing the projects. A hundred per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been permitted in the food processing sector except in food retailing, plantations and alcoholic beverages.
The inflow of FDI in the food processing sector in the last three years was over 861.47 crore.
