setting up of medical institutes

There are a number of basic/applied science institutes being run in the Universities belonging to State/Central Governments. In so far as medical institutions, there are 241 Medical college institutions and 205 Dental college institutions in the country. The Minister of State for Health and Family welfare, Smt. Panabaka Lakshmi said this in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.

The Minister further informed the House that under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), it is proposed to set up one AIIMS-like institution each in the states of Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal. Apart from providing medical treatment in speciality/super speciality discipline, these institutions will provide under-graduate medical education/PG/doctoral courses in various speciality/super speciality discipline. It will provide a fillip for raising the prevailing standards of medical education and provide a capable medical workforce of not only medical graduates but also well-trained specialist and super-specialists comparable to the level of those coming out of AIIMS. Necessary clearances are being obtained for implementation of the PMSSY Scheme, the Minister added. .
