Rajya Sabha

The Government is implementing the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. Once complete, the navigable distance for the ships sailing from the west to the east coast and vice-versa will be reduced in the range of 254-424 nautical miles.

Keeping in view the environmental sensitivity of the region and economic viability of the project, creation of channel to enable vessels drawing a draught of upto 10 metres only has been taken up at present.

This information was given in the Rajya Sabha today in a written reply by the Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Shri T.R. Baalu.
