All the tribal families of Nicobar and other areas, affected by Tsunami, have been provided with intermediate shelters well before the onset of monsoon during this year. In addition, they have been provided with various household items including LPG stoves/cylinders, clothes, utensils, sewing machines, bicycles etc. They have also been given financial assistance for household articles and ex-gratia payments for tribal orphans, widows and families of identified dead/missing tribals feared dead. Employment opportunities in various activities like agriculture, fishery have been made available.

An expenditure of Rs. 58.94 crore has been incurred towards ex-gratia payment to the affected persons including tribals of Nicobar.

This information was given by Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri S. Regupathy in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today.
