Rajya Sabha
The Government does not make any reservation of seats on religious basis in Central Universities in their graduation and post-graduation levels courses. However, each Minority Institution may adopt a policy of reservation for the minorities establishing the institution of their choice, provided the relevant Act/statutes/MoA establishing the institution empower so. The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has exercised its powers in respect of reservation under the relevant provisions of the AMU (Amendment) Act, 1981. The Government has conveyed its no-objection to the decision taken by the appropriate authorities of the AMU.
The decision taken by the appropriate authorities of AMU regarding reservation of seats for Muslims is still in the process of being implemented from the current academic session, viz. 2005-06.
The reservation of seats under other categories in AMU from the academic session 2005-06 shall be as : internal candidates: 20%; nomination by the Vice Chancellor from amongst the children of University employees, including retired employees and those who died in harness, children of alumni, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Backward Classes, outstanding sport-persons, debaters, NCC Cadets and children of Central Government employees recently transferred to Aligarh: 5 per cent where there is no nomination by the Vice Chancellor in a course, the percentage of seats reserved for the internal candidates shall be 25 per cent, instead of 20 per cent.
Further, 3 per cent of the total seats in each of the three categories, namely, Muslims of India, internal candidates and open seats, shall be reserved for the physically challenged candidates (expect in MD/MS/PG Diploma courses in the Faculty of Medicine).
The admission policy shall apply to only those courses of studies upto postgraduate levels where the admissions are made on the basis of entrance tests.
According to the information furnished by AMU, roughly 70 per cent Muslim students, for whom 50 per cent reservation is now provided, were traditionally getting admission in the University prior to introduction of reservation.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shri M.A.A. Fatmi in Rajya Sabha today.
