Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in December 1999 and Nilgiri Mountain Railway in July 2005 have been inscribed by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as World Heritage Sites. The Railways do not propose to declare any other mountain railways as Rail Heritage Sites. However, Kalka-Simla Railway has been proposed for inscription by UNESCO as World Heritage site.
Kalka Simla Railway is yet to be taken up for site evaluation by UNESCO. No time frame is yet available for declaring this Railway as a World Heritage Site.
This information was given by Minister of State for Railways Shri R.Velu in written reply to a question by Shri Jual Oram in Lok Sabha today.
