The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has released a book “Globalisation India’s Adjustment Experience” written by the late Prof. Biplab Dasgupta at a function here today. He presented the first copy of the book to Mrs. Arati Dasgupta.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister observed that this book has a wealth of creative ideas on how to look at India’s problems. He said that the country must find solutions to transform the economy into a dynamic one, enhance capital accumulation in a big way and at the same time absorb modern technology and ensure that increase in productivity does not lead to large scale unemployment. He also emphasised the need to ensure that processes of growth do not hurt the weakest sections of the society. Referring to present international environment which is quite supportive to India’s development, Dr. Singh said that if India has not progressed, one has to look inward for reasons.

The Prime Minister emphasised the need to raise savings rate to 28 to 30 per cent and even higher, which will have a positive impact on the growth rate. He also emphasised the need to bridge critical gaps in education, health and infrastructure. Referring to the problems of power and water in the capital, drainage system in Mumbai and roads in Bangalore, the Prime Minister stressed the need to invest in infrastructure, agriculture and social infrastructure.

Dr. Manmohan Singh expressed hope that late Biplab Dasgupta’s book will inspire creative thinking on how to overcome challenges and find cooperative solutions to these formidable challenges. Terming it as an “optimistic book” he referred to the opportunities and possibilities for progress outlined in the book. The Prime Minister paid homage to late Biplab Dasgupta.
