The Government through its various schemes has been augmenting the efforts of the State Governments and National Sports Federation in promotion of sports all over the country. The National Sports Policy 2001, inter-alia states that indigenous games will be promoted through schemes related to rural sports. Rural Sports Tournament scheme includes traditional games like Archery, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Tug of War and Wrestling. Under the various schemes of Sports Authority of India, traditional Indian sports like Archery, Kabaddi, Kho-kho, Wrestling etc. are also being promoted.
The Government of India through its scheme of Assistance to national Sports Federations gives financial assistance to recognized National Sports Federations as per the provisions of the scheme. Disciplines recognized for this purpose, so far, by the Government of India also include indigenous games like Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, tug of War and Atya Patya.
The recognition to National Sports Federations is given after scrutinizing their applications on various prescribed parameters which include the prevalence/popularity of the Games in the Country, presence of State level associations promoting and supporting such games, efforts made by the federation in last 3 years preceding the date of application in broadbasing the discipline etc. Any discipline, including the indigenous ones, which complies with prescribed conditions can qualify for recognition.
