The Central Government has enacted the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 2002 to provide for development and regulation of mineral resources in the territorial waters, continental shelf, exclusive economic zone and other maritime zones of India. The Act has been notified in the Gazette of India on January 31, 2003. Rules under section 35 of the Act have been framed and are being translated into Hindi for notifying in the Gazette of India. After the publication of the Rules in the Gazette of India, the areas will be thrown open for exploitation of resources.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
