Rajya Sabha
Most of the States are supportive of the concept of the Interlinking of rivers (ILR) programme, provided it can ensure a win-win situation for all States. However, some States have reservations in regard to water availability in their territory and they do not agree to water surpluses as worked out by the National Water Development Agency (NWDA). Some States also have an apprehension that the link proposals may have adverse effects on their existing irrigation and power requirements. Efforts are being made by (NWDA) and the Ministry of Water Resources to remove the apprehensions of the States and convince them to come to an agreement on the interlinking of rivers proposals so that preparation of detailed Project Reports of the links is taken up.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Water Resources, Shri Jai Prakash Narayan Yadav in written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
