The Minister for Law & Justice, Shri H. R. Bhardwaj in a reply to a question from Shri Pramod Mahajan stated in the Rajya Sabha today that the Election Commission is not in favour of giving statutory backing to the provisions of the model code of conduct. The Minister further said that the Government had sought the views of the Commission on the recommendation of the Goswami Committee for giving statutory backing to the model code of conduct, violation of which to be made an electoral offence.
