Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC), a public sector unit of the Coal Ministry, has proposed to set up a 2,000 MW coal based thermal power plant at IB Valley in Orissa. There is a proposal to form a joint venture company between NLC and Mahanadi Coalfieds Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited for implementation of both the mine and power projects. The Government of Orissa is yet to give its consent for the allotment of land for power plant and other facilities. The estimated cost of the proposed power plant would be about Rs.8,000 crore.

The power plant will be generating 14,016 million units per year. Once approved and commissioned, this project would go a long way in bridging the gap between demand and supply of power in Orissa.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
