new projects to increase coal production

The Government has identified 101 new projects to be taken up during Xth Plan to increase the coal production to bridge the widening demand-supply gap. Out of these projects, twenty two are already producing coal and forty five projects are slated for production during 2005-06 and 2006-7. This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

Replying to another question on capacity expansion in coal sector, the Minister informed that to meet demand-supply gap, Government is seriously considering of creating additional capacity in Coal India Limited (CIL) mines. There is a proposal for creating 71.3 million tonnes additional capacity in sixteen mines of CIL and the proposal has been circulated to the concerned ministries / departments for comments.
