Lok Sabha

The Government is taking corrective action regarding the synthetic surface in Bangalore which needs replacement. Giving this information in the Lok Sabha today Shri Prithviraj Chavan, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office said in a written reply that the sports infrastructure of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) is subject to normal wear and tear due to use. The Minister informed the House that the Government has given financial assistance for laying 13 synthetic tracks and 33 artificial hockey turfs in the country during the last five years. Out of these 5 synthetic tracks and 9 artificial hockey turfs have since been laid. Sanction for laying one synthetic track has been cancelled.

“Sports” is a State subject and, therefore, it is the responsibility of the State Governments to create sports infrastructure facilities in the country. However, under the ‘Infrastructure Scheme’, financial assistance is released after receiving the utilization certificate for earlier released grants. It is the duty of the State Governments to maintain these infrastructures. So far as, SAI infrastructure is concerned, there is a technical team headed by an officer of the rank of Superintending Engineer who supervises the construction of infrastructure.
