import of cheap steel

Lok Sabha

Import of steel during the last quarter of 2004-05 and April-May 2005 has shown an increasing trend, particularly from the CIS countries compared to the corresponding periods of the previous year due to reasons like decline in imports by China, lower than expected demand in the European Union, reduction in exports to China by Russia and Ukraine and a higher demand of steel in the domestic market. The domestic steel producers have urged the government to monitor imports, particularly from the CIS countries, so as to avoid any injury to the domestic industry. Government is monitoring the trend and would take appropriate measures when the need arises.

This information was given by the Minister of Steel, Chemicals & Fertilizers, Shri Ram Vilas Paswan in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
