The States are the owners of minerals and pilferage or illegal mining has serious revenue implications for them. The responsibility for checking these activities rests with the State Governments and hence detailed information in this regard is not centrally maintained. State Governments have been empowered to make rules for preventing illegal mining, transportation and storage of minerals under the Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, 1957. However, instances of pilferage / illegal mining in different States are brought to the notice of Central Government from time to time.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
