Marine Wing, Geological Survey of India (GSI) along with Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGS) undertook surveys for gas hydrates. GSI has collected data base on gas hydrates within the Extended Economic Zone (EEZ) with regard to techno-geomorphic environment, seabed sediment nature, their readily oxidized organic matter and total organic content in the offshore domains of Kerala-Konkan coast, Gulf of Mannar, Bay of Bengal off Pulikat Lake and Mahanadi offshore. These areas are possible locales of gas hydrates occurrence. Besides certain submarine canyons which acted as conduit for gas hydrate have been delineated on the basis of tetonogeomorphic considerations.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
