foreign direct investment in food processing

The Government approved 105 proposals between January 2002 and May 2005 from foreign industrialists to set up food processing industries in India. The amount of foreign direct investment(FDI) approved in such cases was Rs. 643.47 crore. The Minister of Food Processing Industries, Shri Subodh Kant Sahai, gave this information in the Lok Sabha today. He said food processing industries are both in the organized and unorganized sector. The number of units in the organized sector is very large and their details are not maintained. The Government has promoted a 100% foreign direct investment in the food processing sector excluding food retailing, plantations and alcoholic beverages, he said.
