fm asks customs & central excise officers to assist traders, manufacturers & service providers

Finance Minister today directed the Chief Commissioners and Directors General of Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax to assist the genuine Importers, Exporters, Manufacturers and Service providers and at the same time take strict action against the evaders. He stressed that while Customs & Service Tax collections are buoyant, steps need to be taken to improve Central Excise collections. Shri Chidambaram was delivering inaugural address at the All India Conference of Chief Commissioners & Directors General of Customs, Central Excise & Service Tax here today. Shri S.S. Palanimanickam, Minister of State for Finance (Revenue) was also present on this occasion.

The Finance Minister appreciated that indirect tax collections as a whole are on track having met the target upto July, 2005. The total indirect tax collection upto July, 2005 is Rs. 54,738 crore as against the target of Rs. 54, 498 crore.

Important issues like computerisation, business process re-engineering, Large Taxpayer Units, working of Help Centres for small scale units and implementation of the Right to Information Act are being discussed at the two day Conference. The Officers will also discuss trends in collection of revenue, legal problems and other key areas.
