extension of tenure of short service commission officers and women special entry scheme officers in the army

Thursday, August 04, 2005

The Union Cabinet today gave its ex-post-facto approval for:

(i) extension of the tenure of women officers from 1997 to 2002, that is, by 5 years

(ii) extension of the tenure of Short Service Commissioned Officers (for Male officers) & Women Special Entry Scheme (Officers) for a period of 14 years, that is, from 10 to 14 years

It will not only mitigate shortage of officers in the Army but also bring better promotional avenues to the regular officers.

The Union Cabinet also approved:

(i) the closure of the Women Special Entry Scheme and induction of women officers in the Army through the Short Service Commission Officers (SSCOs) entry.

(ii) the extending of the substantive promotions to short Service Commissioned Officers applicable to Permanent Commissioned Officers owing to the extended tenure.

It will bring about a parity with the existing time scale promotions available to the Permanent Commissioned Officers and meet the career aspirations of SSCOs.
