Fifteen major expansion /extension coal projects have been taken up for implementation during Xth Plan period with a capacity of 72.25 million tonnes (MT) per year and an investment of Rs.7,094.59 crore. These projects are envisaged to contribute about 52.76 MT of coal during the terminal year of Xth Plan i.e. 2006-07.

Out of these projects, 9 projects have already been sanctioned for capital investment of Rs.2,670.59 crore with a capacity of 44.25 MT per year. These 9 projects are planned to contribute about 43.35 MT during the year 2006-07.

Out of the above 15 projects, 7 projects are costing Rs.100 crore and above, and need to be sanctioned by Government. Out of these 7 projects, 2 projects namely Dipka Expansion Opencast Project & Gevra Expansion opencast project of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) have already been sanctioned by Government and the remaining five projects are under process of Government approval. All these projects are envisaged to be financed through internal resources / outsourcing option.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
