Shri Kamal Nath, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, has said that the 11th Edition of the Delhi Book Fair was an expanded showcase of Indian Publishing and would present the best of Indian books in various languages on a wide range of subjects. Speaking at the inaugural function of the Delhi Book Fair here today, he said that apart from catering to book lovers, the fair would be an opportunity for Indian and overseas publishers to come together and discuss business opportunities in the field.
Shri Kamal Nath said that the Indian publishing industry has grown exponentially over the years and India ranks among the 6 top publishing nations of the world. Apart from publishing 70,000 titles every year in 24 different languages to fulfil the needs of a multilingual society, Indias strong publication base in the English Language is next only to the USA and the UK in the production of English titles he said. The Minister said that with a vast network of universities and educational institutions and a large population of booklovers, the Indian publishing industry has enormous opportunities for growth. In order to achieve further growth in production capacity, the industry needs to be technologically aware of the latest international trends in this sector.
Observing that the books published in the country have earned worldwide recognition for their content and quality of production, Shri Kamal Nath said that India exports books, journals and periodicals worth US $ 100 million to over 80 countries. However, the impact of this is not to be measured in dollar terms, but in terms of ideas as well he added.
