Rajya Sabha

The question of curtailing the vacations of Supreme Court, High Courts and Lower Courts’ Judges have been considered in the past and have found not feasible due to the taxing nature of work of judiciary and the Bar. The Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice had invited views of High Courts in July, 2001 regarding the number of working days and curtailment of vacations. The High Courts had not favoured the idea of increasing the working days barring the Jharkhand High Court.

The Supreme Court of India works for 222 days in a year, High Courts normally work 210 days and the number of working days for the lower Courts are decided by the respective High Courts.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Law and Justice, Shri K. Venkatapathy in a written reply to the questions from Shri Rajeev Shukla in the Rajya Sabha today.
