A Co-ordination Committee on Energy has been set up under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, the Union Minister of Power, Shri P. M. Sayeed informed that other Members of the Committee are: Ministers of Finance, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Power, Coal; Minister of State for Non-Conventional Energy Sources; Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission; Member (Energy), Planning Commission; Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister; Chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council; National Security Adviser and the Principal Secretary to PM as convenor. Member Secretary, Planning Commission and the Secretaries of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministries of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Power, Coal, Non-Conventional Energy Sources would be permanent invitees to the meetings of the Committee.
The Minister further informed that the terms of reference of the Committee were as follows: Identity key areas requiring energy policy initiatives, so that the overall objectives of economic development, energy security and energy efficiency are met; monitor vulnerabilities that directly impinge on energy security aspects; outline the follow up action that needs to be taken for implementing identified policy initiatives; identify institutional mechanisms for implementing policies; periodically monitor key policy decisions and commission studies which would enable arriving at appropriate decisions.
