committee on rehabilitation of families of victims of 1984 riots holds first meeting

The first meeting of the committee constituted to look into the need for providing employment/other source of livelihood/issues relating to rehabilitation of the families of victims of the 1984 riots was held here today. It was presided over by the Secretary(Border Management) in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr.D.K.Sankaran who is the chairman of the committee. Representatives of Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttaranchal, Punjab and the NCT of Delhi took part in the meeting. They gave an account of the steps already taken in their States for relief and rehabilitation. A representative of the Ministry of Finance also attended the meeting. The next meeting of the committee will be held in about two weeks.

The Committee was constituted in pursuance of the assurance given by the Prime Minister and the Home Minister during discussions in Parliament on the Nanavati Commission’s Report. The Committee will submit its report within two months.
