All India coal production during the year 2004-05 is estimated at 382.14 million tonnes (MT) as against 361.16 MT in 2003-04 and 341.27 MT in 2002-03. The value of coal produced by Coal India Limited (CIL) and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which constituted around 94 per cent of total coal produced during 2004-05 was Rs.27,907.93 crore (provisional).

The productivity of Indian coal mines do not compare favourable with those in other countries. This is because of the fact that large scale mechanization is not feasible due to adverse geo-mining conditions and developed pillars in large number of old mines. The method of computation of productivity as followed in Indian coal mines in general is quite different from the same followed internationally.

CIL has taken following steps to increase productivity. In underground mines the company has taken up grouping of mines, introduction of mechanised loading machines, introduction of mass production technology, increasing the number of powered support longwall faces, introduction of shortwall mining and rationalisation of transport system. In opencast mines, the steps are : increase of norms to 330 working days per year against earlier norm of 300 days, opening more greenfield projects of high capacity to suit development of higher size equipment, increasing the size of mine wherever possible, introduction of higher capacity equipment, introduction of surface miner and improving machine availability and utilisation.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
